Piety and Hypocrisy

One incident marred our recent holiday in Greece. We visited Thari monastery on Rhodes, which has a 9th century chapel. There was a cat limping around - one of its front legs was swollen to twice the size it should be, and was bleeding.  The poor animal was crying out in pain. We saw a monk (who looked like Archbishop Makarios, dressed from head to foot in black - ideal attire when it's sunny and 30 plus…) who was on his mobile phone - somewhat incongruous. He had a bit of English, so we asked him what had happened to the cat. He said it had been attacked 3 weeks earlier by another cat. We asked why they had not called a vet. He mumbled something about a woman who had visited a week earlier and claimed to be a vet, saying she would come back - she never did.

If these people 'profess and call themselves Christians', why didn't they try harder to do something for this wretched creature? Even if only to put it out of its misery, which I might have steeled myself to do, had I been able to do so humanely.  Greece is not renowned for its treatment of animals, but this finishes me regarding religion, or more precisely, religious institutions.  Piety and hypocrisy - no real compassion or caring.
