Tesco Plan Ledbury Hypermarket PDF Print E-mail
Supermarket Debate

The grocer's Tesco is planning to build a hypermarket that will dwarf its current supermarket in Ledbury.

Its plan to sell everything from clothes to electrical goods will certainly pressure a currently healthy Ledbury high street.

Tesco will exhibit its proposals to the public at the Market Theatre on Tuesday 24th (2pm to 9pm) and Wednesday 25th May (9am to 5pm)

Tesco is pamphleting the town claiming that its customers want a larger car park. Herefordshire Council's recent position on car parking in Ledbury is there should be less car parking spaces rather than more, as more of us adopt healthier and greener lifestyles by cycling instead of driving.

Under such circumstances it will be difficult to see how the Council could agree to planning permission for a car park on Leadon Way, the proposed area for Ledbury's first hypermarket.

The seaside town of Sheringham (Norfolk) is similar in size to Ledbury. In March 2010, they thought they had won a 14-year battle to stop the super-grocer setting up shop in their town, when North Norfolk District Council planning committee voted in favour of an eco-friendly community project dreamt up by a local farmer instead. However, Tesco submitted a new plan in August 2010 and was given approval in October, according to the BBC.

Ledbury has got, seriously, to get its act together if it has any hope whatsoever of stopping the super-grocer. The anti-Tesco website Tescopoly has some ideas. Don't look to Herefordshire Council for any help - they will be rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of all the lovely dosh they would get from planning gain (S.106) - as they will from the 800 houses nobody wants. They're desparate for a bypass for Hereford, and recent changes in rules where S.106 monies can be spent mean that money made from Ledbury no longer has to benefit Ledbury.

Don't forget - it was a grocer's daughter that started all the rot...
