Could selection be more democratic than election?

Instead of electing MPs would it be more democratic and more representative, if MPs were selected for government in a similar way to how people are selected for jury service?

It is every citizen's duty and responsibility to be educated, employed and pay taxes as well as to defend the country if under attack. So why should it not also be our duty to represent ourselves and our fellow citizens at the higher levels of governance?

Obviously safeguards would need to be in place: a constitution, legal advisers, experts in every field and a responsible media to facilitate discussion, idea formation and argument. After all we would not want our people's Parliament to send the economy into a great depression; start an illegal war without considering the consequences or allow itself to be subjugated by Europe, America or multi-national corporations.

It may be the end of the double-jobbing professional politician - but at least they would not be unemployed - just out of power.

It may spell the end of the current neo-liberal parties, but who would miss them? It's been a long time since the Labour Party represented the working people or their unions; the Liberals have sunk themselves by their own hypocrisy and the "effing" Tories represent the corporations and the elite, just as the other main parties do.

Could you imagine a UK Parliament leading the world into a future democracy where the government is made up of intelligent people who actually proportionally represent their country by factors such as gender, age and ethnicity?

No? Neither can I.

Let the established neo-liberals continue then with their illusory democracy and let us complain not of our political impotency!
