Ledbury - Shaping Our Place 2010-2026

The first consultation meeting with Herefordshire Council regarding the proposed development of Ledbury was held last night.

In summary, Ledbury will see 900 new homes built as part of a wider plan for Herefordshire (the plan intends to encourage Herefordshire people to stay in the County - born here, study here, work here and bring up our own families here...)

The consultation covers proposed sites - namely near the Viaduct, on the Cricket Ground, off the Dymock Road and Little Marcle. It seems a foregone conclusion that the Viaduct site with see the biggest development - nearly 500 houses.

The main concerns of those who attended seemed to be the supporting infrastructure required; doctors, dentists, the Cottage Hospital, school places, parking, ambulance services, water mains and sewerage, flooding etc.. and whilst we were 'assured' that these would all be addressed there were no details or plans to show how/where this would be achieved.

In addition, reassurance was needed regarding the 'social' housing (now called 'affordable housing!?) required by Ledbury people - there was no information or assurance that this new development would be, first and foremost, available to Herefordshire people.

There are so many issues to be addressed. This development will increase Ledbury's size by an additional 25%.

Please get involved and check out the Herefordshire Council website or go to the Roadshows. Responses (with evidence) have to be submitted by 12th March so we have only 6 weeks.

Re: Ledbury - Shaping Our Place 2010-2026

Surveyors have been seen down by the Full Pitcher this week, and the rumour mill is saying that the Full Pitcher will disappear to help make room for new houses there. If Ledbury loses both the Full Pitcher and the Ring O Bells where will the thousands of extra people living in Ledbury socialise in the evening?
Oh, I forgot, you're not supposed to go out anymore - it's been discouraged. Stay at home with your Sky, freeview, laptop, you tube, facebook and stroke the dog .
Stay In Your Homes - Plug in and turn off!

Re: Ledbury - Shaping Our Place 2010-2026

I wonder how our local schools would cope with such a large and dramatic influx of families? How many children would come with 900 new homes?

Our Ledbury Primary already looks fuller than capacity and there are scores of Ledbury children who attend the village primary schools. Would these village schools expect to take up the extra children or would Ledbury be looking at getting itself a second primary school, perhaps one with a different educational emphasis and philosophy that would give local children and parents a real choice?

Driving children to village schools is hardly an environmentally friendly way of doing things - until transport systems become really eco-friendly, which still looks a long way off.
What would happen now, if all those Ledbury children came back from the village schools and attended Ledbury Primary? Surely, Ledbury Primary would not be able to cope with the numbers, and the village schools themselves would be sorely depleted. Would the village schools be forced to close?

And secondary education......

Allegedly we don't have to worry about the schools or doctors, dentists etc.. If we need more places they'll be provided!!!! Shame they couldn't tell us how or where yet expect us to make an 'informed' decision about where we want the development without this vital information. I've had my daughter on the list for a nursery place for nearly a year and there's no guarantee she'll get one now. I can't imagine what will happen later...
Next roadshow is 23rd Feb in St Katharines....

Re: Ledbury - Shaping Our Place 2010-2026

I wrote to the Ledbury Reporter requesting an article concerning the proposed development and received no response nor found any reference to the issue in this edition so have written again (copy below). Maybe fellow Ledbury Portal members could help by also contacting them? Thanks

"I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am to see that my letter (below) failed to make it on this week's letter page but was overlooked for yet more letters concerning the dog-waste situation in Malvern. An incedible 5 of the 9 letters in this issue are about the same topic, one of which has been printed before.
It is such a shame that our local paper seems so disinterested in what is happening in our town. I understand you have to remain impartial, but surely a development of the size proposed would warrant at least a small paragraph in the last issue before the Council's Roadshow in  the town (Feb 23rd). I am sure that when the bulldozers move onto the cricket pitch, the people of Ledbury will rest easy knowing the dog-poo situation in Malvern is as bad as ever, and another nursery has been having half-term fun!
There is still time for a decent article next week before the consultation ends on 12th March....I will keep my fingers crossed."

Re: Ledbury - Shaping Our Place 2010-2026

That's typical of the American-owned, Worcester-based, Malvern-centred Ledbury Reporter. But what hasn't helped the situation any, is Herefordshire Council still withholding public information from the Ledbury Community Portal and its readers.
As far as I'm concerned the Council's roadshow was a secret meeting - I didn't know about it, so I didn't attend.
I don't think they really want our opinions - them saying so is just another example of their propaganda. And besides does it matter what we say? Look at the new library build. Phase one was agreed and the Council went away and behind closed doors, without consultation with Ledbury people, created phase two which was radically different from that agreed in phase one. What's the point in talking to them?
They will do what they want - I'll be down there with my camera if you're planning to lie in front of the bulldozers.

I wonder if anyone has noticed Herefordshire Council's biodiversity planning on the Internet:

Sorry. You have to be registered to access this content.

They are doing a lot of thinking, planning and counting, but not a lot else by the looks of it.

I would have thought 900 new homes around Ledbury would cause a loss to local biodiversity when tarmac, concrete and bricks and mortar replace hedgerows, trees and fields. The increase of families will mean an increase of cats, dogs and rats that usually accompany them - which will again impact on local biodiversity.

I should imagine this will take a lot of head scratching and number crunching for Herefordshire Council's biodiversity planning to calculate - if that even comes into the equation.
