The bins in the picture: the black bin is just land fill; the green wheelie is for compost, garden rubbish, clippings, grass, cardboard and shredded paper etc; the green box is for tins, glass and paper all in seperate compartments. I once accidently put a tetra pack in the green wheelie and got a sticker on the bin saying I had contaminated the bin and it would not be emptied untill I decontaminated it. Now the grey caddy stays in the house. You put the biodegradable bags [made from mushrooms] in it and put all food waste in there. When full tie the bag and put it in the blue box which is collected every week. The food waste makes bioelectricity. The local biodigester makes bio-gas and bio-fertiliser. Some of the bio-gas runs the vehicles that makes the collections and the rest is sold to the National Grid. Editor: Adam is a frequent visitor to Ledbury having once lived here. His correspondence highlights just how far Herefordshire is behind its neighbours when it comes to waste management and recycling. Herefordshire Council are currently having a public consultation on waste until 10th July. You can contact them on this address: Waste Services Manager Richard Wood PO Box 167 Hereford HR4 0WY email:
