Disposable nappies take at least 500 years to start decomposing, according to estimates – the length of time since Henry VIII’s accession to the throne!

To mark Real Nappy Week (27th April – 1st May) a series of events are planned throughout Gloucestershire giving new parents the opportunity to find out more about real nappies.

As an alternative to disposables, modern ‘real’ nappies are made from natural fabrics, are easy to use and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They have flushable or washable liners to catch any solid waste and can be washed on a 40 degrees cycle. Parents who use them can save up to £600 on their first baby alone compared to disposables.

Hettie Harris, who promotes real nappies in the county, says they are becoming increasingly popular. She said: “More and more parents are aware of the potential savings that can be made by using real nappies, especially during a recession when for some people money is tight. They are so easy to use and comfy and by avoiding disposables, you are benefiting the environment too – it’s a win win situation.”

Many parents have already taken advantage of the Real Nappy Voucher scheme – which is supported by Gloucestershire County Council.

On offer is a one off payment of £30 towards the cost of purchasing real nappies.

During Real Nappy week which starts on April 27th, a series of events will be held, with experts on hand to give help and advice, as well as demonstrations of real nappies.
