Detail of a typecase - the small compartments are for individual letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces. The fag is for enjoyment. Detail of a poem being set on a gallery. Typefaces - Cheltenham and Garamond Abbey. A poster on the floor waiting to be distributed. N.B. The type is cut in wood and some cast in metal. Guttenberg is the most famous man to make this form of type in 1450. Caxton introduced it to England in 1476. Travelling presses then made the printed word available to everyone.
