Council Votes Against Tesco Application PDF Print E-mail

Ledbury Town Council last night (22.9.11) voted at Full Council to recommend that Herefordshire Council refuses the Tesco planning application. No grounds were given for this recommendation.

The vote was 5 for the recommendation, with three opposing it. Six councilors abstained, including the three ward councilors, while councilor Eager refused to vote.

Councilor Bradford asked to see the impact assessment that Herefordshire Council has commissioned. However, he was told by the clerk that it had not yet been prepared, but that the council had to make a decision without it.

I'm told the reason for ME not voting was that he objected to the matter having to be discussed/voted on there and then. Re the abstentions I do not know. However, I gather the Council were told that their vote had to be made last week or they'd loser the chance top vote at at all. Herefordshire Council are obliged to work within a strict time frame for considering the application so I guess HC is requiring all interested parties to comment

In what way does local town councillors abstaining represent the views of local people? And why did councillor Eager 'refuse' to vote - what's all that about?? I call these people to account.

These people stand supposedly to represent the people who elected them

This is not a ringing endorsement for having the superstore or not!! Not the reality on the street. This so called vote begs many questions....
