My Dad used to say

                               that Elvis wouldn't last

That 'All Shook Up' and 'Hound Dog'

                               were his dying blast.

From America? No - he'd never last.

In nineteen-sixty-three or maybe two

I played my mum The Beatles - 'Love Me Do'

She said she didn't like the group -

From Liverpool? No class -

They had the wrong sound -

                               they never last.

With my own kids I took a different tack

'It's your music,' I'd say

'You can't expect us to understand Punk

                                    or appreciate Rap.'

Now years later my parents are both dead.

Perhaps what the music really said

Was: However close to family you clasp

It's your mum and dad that never last.
